Welwyn: Leopards, 2008

Organised by the UK Photo Safari group, this was a rare chance to watch some rare leopards close up.

Breeding for resilience

The Santago Leopard Project, in Welyn, Hertfordshire, rears big cats for breeding with their counterparts in other parts of the world. The idea was to broaden the gene pool, to make the offspring more resilient.

Contortions

Among the species we saw were Persian Leopard, Snow Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Lynx and Black Panther. I had fun observing the cats, as well as watching other photographers contort into unnatural positions.

Even though the leopards were enclosed in fences, one poor chap managed to get his hand viciously scratched, needing stitches. The dangers photographers go to for a picture!
